STORY

Established in April 2012, Spatial Collective Limited is a Kenya-based geospatial innovation and technology consulting company.

Originally founded to help communities and organizations leverage available technologies for essential data collection, the company has since expanded its mission. Today, it also develops and deploys its own technologies and methods to address major development challenges.

Working in challenging environments with oftentimes limited existing data, the company tackles global issues, including livelihoods and economic prosperity, environmental preservation and management, governance initiatives, safety and security, and property rights.

Throughout its years of operation, the company has heavily invested in testing and developing new technologies and methods to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Its efforts include:

  • Using collective action through social media and the internet to improve access to public services.
  • Utilizing terrestrial cameras and micro-tasking to map undocumented communities.
  •  Leveraging mobile technologies and cloud computing to secure property rights.
  • Creating online platforms for reporting and solving development issues.
  • Deploying drones and machine learning to map agricultural fields and properties.
  • Developing search engines to help people find suitable places to live.
  • Testing location-based messaging services to address place-specific situations.
  • Collaborating with communities to tackle crime and safety concerns.

Since 2012, the company successfully completed over a hundred projects and trained hundreds of individuals across East Africa, equipping them with skills in mapping, utilizing technology in development projects, data management, and collective action.

The company’s reach extends across Eastern, Western, and Southern Africa, where they have worked with dozens of communities and provided vital assistance to various national and international organizations through data collection, research, and management.

In line with its commitment to inclusivity, Spatial Collective’s team comprises data collectors, trainers, and staff members who come from the very communities they serve, ensuring local perspectives are valued and respected.

The company’s extensive network of partners and clients includes renowned institutions such as the World Bank, the United Nations, the Government of Kenya, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Municipality of Mwanza, Banadir Regional Administration in Mogadishu, Kenya Space Agency, Omidyar Network Services, Rockefeller Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PLACE, Cadasta Foundation, Cities Alliance, Clark University, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, OpenMap Development Tanzania, Danish Demining Group, DAI Global, and Kenya Red Cross.
